Important Concepts:


Math:
Students will be taught the fundamentals of statistics by comparing percentage, wages and work hours between China and India's sweatshop making America's most popular name brands.

Science:
Throughout the unit the students will be taught the how the factory pollution affects the environment as well as human body.

Social Studies:
Students will understanding how the struggle of making a living can help give perspective to the conditions that other children have endured to aid in their families survival.
Students will study examples of the harsh working conditions that existed. They will learn why they existed, as well as how they affected the workers.

English:
-Students will understand how literary works (including Upton Sinclair's The Jungle) relate to the working class era. They will use both comparing/contrasting techniques and persuasive writing to further their understanding of struggling factory workers.
-Students will understand the elements of working class struggles and factors relating to their cause.
-Students will understand that writers will often create stories based around struggle in the working class.
-Students will be able to make determinations, based on learned information and develop clear thesis statements.
